AA in Theatre Arts (Degree Requirements)

The Acting Track is an immersive program which concentrates on building performance skills and professionalism. Students will undergo intensive work on voice, movement, characterization, improvisation and ensemble building. They will also develop audition skills and learn about “the business” from professionals currently working as actors, directors and casting agents in the Bay Area. Students are expected to audition for and perform in SCT productions, as well as those of other area companies.

The Theatre Generalist Track presents a traditional approach, and is somewhat more academic. This program is designed primarily for those headed to four-year programs, who are not necessarily interested in a career as an actor. Rather, this group forms the base of teachers, scholars, and writers in the field of theatre. This is not to say that students who follow this track will never obtain employment as an actor—quite the contrary. These students are prepared to complete a Bachelor’s degree and often go on to pursue graduate school before entering the workforce, though.
The Technical Track is for the student who is interested in the technology of the entertainment field. From set design and construction to lighting design, rigging, costumes or audio, this track covers a wide arena. The field of Technical Theatre is actually a misnomer. Those who specialize in this work design, rig and build a variety of things we see every day. From television, nightclubs, and live events (including theatre, music, and sports) to theme parks and restaurants, technical theatre majors find work in a wide range of places.
